FET Phase (Grades 10–12)

Grade 12 subjects

In Grades 10 to 12 learners take seven subjects: four compulsory ones (two languages, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and Life Orientation) and at least three electives of their own choice. Learners follow either the Academic (General) or the Technical pathway, so two learners in the same grade often study different subjects.

Elective subjects

Learners choose at least three electives, so no two learners need the same list. Some combinations aren't allowed by the national policy (for example Mathematics together with Mathematical Literacy), and AlignWellz checks that when you choose your child's subjects.

Grade 12: common questions

Which subjects does a Grade 12 learner take?

Learners in Grade 12 take two languages, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation, plus at least three electives such as Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Geography and History. The exact combination differs from learner to learner, so AlignWellz lets you choose the subjects your child actually takes.

Can an AI tutor help with all Grade 12 subjects?

Your child can ask the AlignWellz tutor about any of their subjects, or attach a photo of a worksheet or homework. For 25 of the 41 Grade 12 subjects listed here we have read the CAPS topics for each term from the official document, so your child can choose a term and topic to work on. Every subject page also links the official CAPS document, and the tutor can help with all of them. AI can make mistakes, so it works best alongside your child's teacher and textbooks.

Is the order of topics the same at every school?

Not necessarily. CAPS is the national framework, and the order of topics inside it is not prescriptive, so the term-by-term plan here is the Department of Basic Education's suggested sequence. Your child's school (or your homeschool plan) may teach topics in a different order, so check with their teacher. AlignWellz puts your child's own worksheets, homework and textbooks first.

Can I download the official CAPS documents and workbooks?

Yes. Each subject page links to the Department of Basic Education's CAPS document for that subject in English and Afrikaans, and to the official DBE workbooks where they exist (the DBE publishes workbooks for Literacy, Numeracy and Life Skills in Grades R to 6 and Numeracy in Grades 7 to 9). The files are on the DBE's website, so you always get their current version.
