Maths help from Grade R to Grade 12
Maths builds step by step, so knowing what each grade covers — and where your child's gaps are — makes all the difference. Here's the whole CAPS maths journey, and how an AI tutor can help along the way.
Maths is one subject among many. AlignWellz supports learners across their school subjects, so see every grade and its subjects or the subjects overview.
How maths grows through school
Foundation Phase (Grades R–3)
Foundation Phase maths builds number sense first: counting, comparing and sorting, simple patterns, and spotting shapes and measures in everyday life. Young learners do best with short, hands-on, conversational practice.
Intermediate Phase (Grades 4–6)
In the Intermediate Phase maths widens from basic number work into fractions, measurement, geometry and data, and mental maths becomes a daily skill. Fractions and multi-step problems are common places for confidence to wobble, so steady practice pays off.
Senior Phase (Grades 7–9)
The Senior Phase is where maths turns more abstract: algebra, functions and graphs, integers and exponents, and geometric reasoning (including the Theorem of Pythagoras) carry more weight. It is also the stage that prepares learners to choose between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy for Grade 10.
FET Phase (Grades 10–12)
In the FET Phase learners take either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy (or Technical Mathematics on the Technical pathway). The topics here are for CAPS Mathematics. It is a high-stakes subject because it counts towards the National Senior Certificate and feeds into many post-school options.
How AlignWellz helps with maths
- A patient tutor: your child can type, speak or upload a photo of their homework and get step-by-step guidance that checks understanding.
- A topic map: practice and conversations are mapped to CAPS maths topics, so progress is tracked by topic, from beginning to strong.
- Adaptive practice: questions get easier or harder depending on how your child is doing, currently on selected Grade 8 topics.
- Visibility for parents: see time spent, topic progress and daily goals on the parent dashboard.

Frequently asked questions
Which grades does the maths topic map cover?
Every grade from Grade R to Grade 12. Topics and term placement come from the Department of Basic Education's CAPS Mathematics Annual Teaching Plans.
Does it cover Mathematical Literacy?
No. This page and the practice questions are for CAPS Mathematics. Mathematical Literacy is a separate subject in Grades 10–12, and the tutor can help with it, and its topics by term are on its own subject page.
Are there practice questions for every topic?
Not yet. Adaptive practice questions are currently available for selected Grade 8 topics (Theorem of Pythagoras, Algebraic Equations and Exponents). For every other grade and topic, the AI tutor can work through examples and practice problems in conversation.
Will the tutor just give my child the maths answers?
It's designed to guide: asking questions back, giving hints and checking understanding before explaining. AI can make mistakes, so check important answers against class notes.
