Frequently asked questions

What is a CAPS document?

CAPS is the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement: the Department of Basic Education's national document for each school subject. It lists what is taught in each term and how learners are assessed.

Is it free to download the CAPS documents?

Yes. The documents are published by the Department of Basic Education and are free to download. The links on this page go straight to the Department's website, so you always get their current version.

Does my child's school have to follow the same order of topics?

Not necessarily. CAPS is the national framework and the suggested order of topics inside it is not prescriptive. Your child's own school worksheets, textbooks and teacher come first, and homeschoolers and private schools follow their own plans.

Which language is the document in?

Most subjects have an English and an Afrikaans edition, and both are linked where the Department publishes them.

How does AlignWellz use CAPS?

For each subject and grade where we have read the topics from the official document, the AlignWellz grade pages show them term by term, and your child can pick a term and topic for the AI tutor to work on.
