Is an AI Tutor Safe for My Child? What Parents Should Ask
By the AlignWellz team · Published 4 October 2026 · 7 min read
AI tutors are arriving in children's lives quickly, and it is reasonable to feel unsure. Is it accurate? Is it safe? What happens to my child's information? Will they stop thinking for themselves? These are the right questions. This guide gives you a checklist you can apply to any AI tutor — including ours — and is honest about the limits of the technology.
Start with what an AI tutor is — and isn't
An AI tutor uses a large language model to hold a conversation about schoolwork. It can explain ideas in different ways, answer follow-up questions at any hour and be endlessly patient. It is not a teacher, it does not know your child the way a teacher does, and it can make mistakes — sometimes confidently. That last point is the most important one to understand.
Accuracy: assume it can be wrong
AI can state wrong answers fluently. A responsible tool is upfront about this, and a responsible family builds simple habits around it: check important answers against the textbook or class notes, ask the tutor to show its working, and encourage your child to say "that doesn't look right" when something seems off.
Does it teach, or just answer?
The biggest educational risk is not a wrong answer; it is a child who learns to ask for answers instead of learning. Look for a tutor designed to guide: asking questions back, giving hints before solutions, checking understanding, and changing its explanation when a child says they do not understand. Be wary of tools that simply output finished homework.
Child safety
Ask what happens if a child raises something serious. A well-designed children's tool should not carry on as normal if a child says they are in danger or want to hurt themselves; it should encourage them to speak to a trusted adult. Also look at whether the tool is built around a parent-controlled account rather than open access for children, and whether it contains advertising or links out to the open internet.
Privacy and your child's information
In South Africa, personal information — especially a child's — is protected by POPIA. A trustworthy provider will publish a clear privacy policy that says what is collected, why, who it is shared with, how long it is kept and how to ask for it to be corrected or deleted. Pay particular attention to who processes the conversations behind the scenes: most AI tutors rely on a third-party AI provider, and you are entitled to know that.
How much can you see?
You should be able to see what your child is working on and how they are progressing, so that you can support them and notice problems early. A tutor your child uses in secret is a tutor you cannot help them use well.
A checklist for any AI tutor
- Does it guide understanding instead of just handing over answers?
- Is it honest that it can make mistakes?
- Is there a clear response when a child mentions danger or self-harm?
- Is the account controlled by a parent, with no advertising aimed at children?
- Is there a readable privacy policy that explains POPIA, third parties and deletion?
- Can you see progress and what your child has been working on?
- Can you try it without handing over payment details first?
How AlignWellz approaches these questions
We built AlignWellz around this checklist, and we would rather you check our claims than take our word for them. Accounts are created and controlled by a parent. The tutor is designed to guide step by step and check understanding rather than just give answers, and if a child mentions being in danger or wanting to hurt themselves, it does not continue as normal but encourages them to talk to a parent, teacher or another adult they trust. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect, which service providers help us run the product (including the AI provider that generates the tutor's replies), and how to request correction or deletion. Parents can see their child's progress in the parent dashboard. There is a 7-day free trial and no credit card is required.
And to be clear about limits: AI can make mistakes, AlignWellz does not replace a teacher, and we cannot guarantee any particular academic result.
